The Australian Government has officially published the “Consumer Goods (Toys for Children up to and including 36 Months of Age) Safety Standard 2023”. This regulatory measure aims to enhance safety protocols by specifically addressing risks such as choking and suffocation hazards for young children under the age of 36 months.

Australia Consumer Goods (Toys for Children up to and including 36 Months of Age) Safety Standard 2023

The 2023 Safety Standard for Consumer Goods outlines design and construction guidelines for toys intended for children up to and including 36 months of age. Its primary objective is to provide a framework ensuring that toys for children up to three years of age meet stringent safety benchmarks.

Manufacturers and suppliers can ensure compliance by aligning their products with one of the following established standards:

  • Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2023
  • International (ISO) standard ISO 8124 1:2022
  • European Directive EN 71 1:2014 + A1:2018
  • American Safety Standard ASTM F963 17

Special Provisions for Electronic Toys

For electronic toys, adherence to the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 62115:2018 is mandatory. This standard addresses electric toy safety, ensuring that children within this age range cannot access the battery compartment or remove batteries without the use of a tool.

Transition Timeline

All importers, suppliers and manufacturers must conform to the new standard. The deadline to achieve full compliance with the new standard is set for the 4th of March, 2025. Click here to read the full publication.
